What is a Root Canal?
A root canal is part of restorative dental care. This procedure is performed when the centre of the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes infected or inflamed.
Common signs of damaged pulp are tooth pain, swelling, and a warm sensation in the gums. Additionally, the affected area might be sensitive to hot and cold temperatures.
Severe tooth pain can make eating and talking quite painful, and it may lead to abscesses. Therefore, visiting your dentist is essential if you experience these symptoms.
By performing a root canal, your dentist can alleviate these symptoms and address the infection. In certain instances, this procedure may save your tooth from being extracted.

When specialized care is necessary, we refer patients to endodontists for root canal therapy and advanced endodontic treatments.
The Root Canal Procedure
Dentists generally perform a root canal treatment in two appointments.
First Appointment
The dentist will create a small access hole in the upper part of the tooth. Various tools will be used to locate the canals and sterilize the necrotic (damaged) pulp tissue to eliminate the infection in the tooth.
A temporary filling is applied to seal the upper part of the tooth. Depending on the severity of the infection, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics.
Second Appointment
During your second visit, the dentist will reopen the small access hole to file and sterilize the tooth again. The canals will then be filled with a specialized filling material that takes the place of the tooth's nerve.
A permanent filling will be used to seal the tooth.
